Fibre Planner

Fibre Planner

Overview:

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Fibre Planner to support the design and planning of our XGSPON (10 Gigabit Symmetrical Passive Optical Network) infrastructure. This role will focus on both core network and customer connection planning, ensuring efficient and scalable delivery of fibre services from exchange to premises.

You will be responsible for producing high-quality fibre network plans that meet performance, scalability, and regulatory requirements. Experience in diversion and capacity planning is desirable but not essential.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of next-generation fibre network deployment in a collaborative and fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and plan fibre routes and network elements for XGSPON deployments, including core, distribution, and customer connections.
  • Produce high-quality fibre network plans using GIS/CAD tools and ensure alignment with network architecture and business requirements.
  • Plan customer connections, including the optimal use of existing infrastructure and proposing new routing where required.
  • Support the delivery team with ready-for-build (RFB) documentation and ensure designs are buildable, cost-effective, and future-proof.
  • Collaborate with field surveyors, civils teams, build partners, and other stakeholders to validate and optimise plans.
  • Incorporate inputs from site surveys and update plans based on as-built data and redlines.
  • Assist with capacity planning, identifying areas of congestion or growth for proactive expansion.
  • Support diversion planning, adjusting designs in response to third-party developments, local authority requirements, or internal design changes.
  • Ensure accurate and timely updates to network inventory systems and documentation.
  • Maintain compliance with relevant regulations, planning permissions, and health & safety standards.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Solid experience in fibre network planning, ideally with exposure to XGSPON, GPON, or FTTB technologies.
  • Experience planning customer connections, from drop fibre to ONT (Optical Network Terminal) locations.
  • Familiarity with Openreach PIA, duct and pole infrastructure, and wayleave processes.
  • Experience with diversion planning and capacity modelling is desirable but not essential.
  • Proficient with GIS/CAD tools (e.g., QGIS, AutoCAD, Smallworld, 3-GIS, or similar).
  • Understanding of fibre network architecture, including split ratios, fibre allocations, and splice schematics.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to interpret complex survey and design data.
  • Good stakeholder management and communication skills.

Qualifications:

  • Degree, diploma, or vocational qualification in Telecommunications, Engineering, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Valid UK driving licence (if site visits are required).

Desirable Certifications (Not Essential):

  • NRSWA (Street Works)
  • SA001/SA002 Openreach Accreditation
  • Fibre Planning or PON Technology Certifications
