How Close are we to Smart and Sustainable Cities?

The concept of the ‘smart and sustainable city’ has evolved over the past decade to integrate advanced technology and sustainability principles to create more efficient, livable, and eco-friendly urban environments, as well as seize the power of data and data sharing. In that time, the notion of ‘smart’ has evolved too. Once focused primarily on technology, ‘smart’ has become more holistic in its reach and has come to include environmental responsibility and social inclusivity. The group represented devolved authorities, local councils, and the private businesses helping bring about change in the wider environment.

From net zero and environmental sustainability to themes surrounding the economy and access to funding, we discussed the evolving definition of ‘smart’ in the context of our cities and regions, including the ripple through to business and citizens. But how do we build a picture of a new type of city when so many moving parts are involved?
