Bus company going places with MPLS network

A bus company that is going places with an ITS full fibre network

The business-critical network that Nottinghamshire-based bus company, Trentbarton awarded to full fibre network operator ITS, to design, build and operate has now gone live, connecting 15 sites stretching across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and South Yorkshire.

ITS has built an MPLS wide area network (WAN) to give Trentbarton the connectivity capabilities it needs to underpin all its operational and customer-facing data needs – including live departures information, ticketing and smartcard payment systems. A big driver for the upgrade was to allow Trentbarton to implement a bespoke fleet management system developed to help the engineering team predict and prevent breakdowns before they happen, keeping its buses on the road.

“Mission critical connectivity underpins our business. We have multiple offices, including our customer travel shops, over a fairly large geographical area, all of which need to speak to each other and share information. Our passengers are our number one priority. We need to have great connectivity to ensure the smooth running of our operations and keep our buses out on the road.

“Our network was already under strain, and when we decided we wanted to develop and introduce a new fleet management system we knew that would be a step too far. We heard about ITS and the full fibre network it has in Nottingham that reuses existing council ducts. They have delivered in every respect, tackling what was a complex challenge, building an MPLS network that can support us moving forward and protects us from the copper switch off.”

Mark Greasley, Group Projects Director, Trentbarton

“We are delighted to be working with Trentbarton, and to have won this contract having tendered against other players including the incumbent. We developed a solution that worked technically and commercially, building a multi-site network that is both flexible and will scale with their needs. Having invested in a full fibre network in Nottingham it’s rewarding to see how it is benefitting businesses in the area.”
