Maximising Capacity : Gigabit Fibre Networks

One of ITS’ missions is to make smart, or intelligent use of our assets. From utilising ducts, to buildings and even church spires, to build our networks. We have recently hit a milestone in Bristol where we have multiplied the capacity on one of our fibre trunks rather than add more physical fibre.

“By using Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) we have created 36 channels per pair of fibres enabling us to make better use of the asset we already have rather than having to lay more cables.

“This particular trunk crosses the river, so to have added more fibre would have been disruptive and taken significantly longer to complete. Since creating the additional capacity we have already installed new businesses onto this network who are enjoying uncontended, full fibre connectivity.”
